Now, since I determined that as we can improve our homes by restoring old décor, we can also improve our lives by renewing our minds (blog #1). During further deliberation, #themindisahouse became my main theme, but then the next step surfaced.
How to portray this through art?
This time the research was to move onto suitable art methods and examining of the self.
During my Unisa art studies, I enjoyed installation art (see image). It grew and developed in concept and size (photo 2013 exhibition), but it was not practical working from a small garage while living in a small town. And moreover, hubby and me were planning to travel for his business so we decided to move to a lock up and go unit. Installation art and sculptural work would not be practical. The choice of art medium would have to be small, clean and easy to use, especially when journeying.
Digital. Clean. Basic storability. Small. Easy transferable to an ‘office’ space of my choice anywhere. Easy-peasy. Klaar en gedaan.
Easy-peasy? Yes? No. Exploring between RAMs and ROMs and sizes and capabilities and storage and online and offline choices and software and price ranges and who-knows-what made me feel like I got lost in a digital decision maze game. Around every corner of brand-new half-knowledge was a dead end or a locked door and I didn’t know how to use the key, which I could only use if I can solve another riddle. A virtual nightmare.
After many nights of staring at the ceiling, I made a choice. Transferring photos was super easy. Drawing with a stylus is a dream come true. The learning curve on the new software was quite steep, but because I enjoyed it so much, it was not too cumbersome to press on and play around each day on my new toy. No mess and it is super-simple to store.
Thank goodness gracious me, finally the medium has been sorted. Sigh of relief.
